Dinner at Restaurant 27, Southsea

August 23, 2017

What a treat to return to Restaurant 27 in Southsea where we had dined previously a couple of times.  We were instantly welcomed with a glass of sparkling wine and some unusual (and tasty) canapés.

Our pre-starter of a pea veloute was quite gorgeous and this was followed by smoked and roasted shoulder of lamb – served in a glass tumbler and covered with a carrot mousse.  It looked more like a dessert than a starter however the lamb, which was nestling beneath the mousse, was quite delicious.  Black garlic king prawns were next – their appearance was slightly disconcerting but the flavour was outstanding.  The Umami duck was pink and succulent and was accompanied by sweet potato, mushroom, mustard seeds and apparently “feta” – the latter seemed to have disappeared but it was a lovely dish.  After a selection of Isle of Wight cheeses we were served a dessert which looked like some exotic board game.  Lots of delightful mouthfuls here and a bit of “theatre” with the raspberry infusion! A variety of wines from different countries complemented every course – obviously chosen with care and considerable knowledge.

After such a feast few of us could do justice to the petit fours which were served with the coffee.  A most successful and enjoyable evening for the Chaîne.  Kevin Bingham, the Chef Patron, was presented with a well-deserved commemorative plaque by Bailli Andrew Crawford.
