Excellent lunch enjoyed at Root, Bath

The Cotswolds Bailliage recently enjoyed a lunch at the new Root in Bath.

Although the restaurant generally bills itself as a small plates, vegetarian led, they pulled out all the stops to offer us a super 3 course meal with some exquisitely paired wines.

"Impressed that as I'd ordered the veggie option for the main course, I was presented with a starter minus the bacon in the crumb - good attention to detail!"

Su Joyce, Vice-Conseiller Gastronomique Honoraire

Hand Dived scallops, Wye valley Asparagus , smoked cods roe, bacon crumb

Weingut Thorle Reisling, 2022 – Rheinhessen, Germany

Oh my what a start to the meal, just a perfect balance, the scallops flavour shone through and making the smoked cods roe into a ‘sauce’ (with the consistancy of a hollandaise) really added depth to the dish.

The delicately flowery Reisling paired perfectly

Somerset Marsh Lamb, crispy sweetbread, garden pea, Mint Sauce, Jus

Freire Lobo, Vigno Tinto 2022 – Dao, Portugal

The lamb was cooked to perfection and much as I enjoy potato the absence of it was a good move by the chef.

The wine was a perfect balance, smooth and with a bit of weight on the palate

Chocolate Opera cake, roasted hazelnuts, Coffee Syrup, vanilla ice cream

The perfect finish to our experience, not too sweet and the coffee syrup complemented the hazelnut and chocolate beautifully and I was pleased I had some of the Vigno Tinto left as it was a great balance to the dessert.
