Christmas Lunch: The Leconfield, Petworth

December 13, 2012

This is our first visit to this two-year’s established restaurant and we are lunching privately in the spectacular Vaulted Dining Room, with original beams, and original wattle and daub construction. For more than 250 years the The Red Lion Inn was sited here and was a popular tavern for miles around. Now transformed into a beautiful restaurant it is situated in the centre of Petworth and is under the same ownership as the nearby Hungry Guest delicatessen, with its magnificent cheese room. It would be well worth while setting some time aside time, before or after the meal, for some exploration of the deli and Petworth itself.

Head chef David “Taffy” Lewis began his hospitality career at seafood restaurant The Crab at Chieveley, which holds two AA rosettes. Then he worked as senior chef de partie at Harts restaurant in Nottingham. From there, David went on to refine his skills as sous chef at The Bull Hotel in Dorset, before moving to another double rosette establishment, The Fish House restaurant, at Chilgrove. He worked there as sous chef for two years before joining the Leconfield at its opening in April 2011.
