Countdown to Båstad: Britain’s Young Sommelier Steps onto the World Stage

The International Jeunes Sommeliers Competition begins on 14 October, Great Britain’s newly crowned young sommelier, Kamila Blaszczyk, is preparing for five exacting days of tasting, service and food-and-wine pairing in Båstad, Sweden.

The countdown has begun. In mid October, the elegant seaside resort of Båstad will welcome the brightest rising talents in wine service for the 2026 International Jeunes Sommeliers Competition, staged from 14–18 October at the Skansen Båstad hotel. Between the beach and harbour, competitors will be tested not simply on what they know, but on how calmly and precisely they can bring that knowledge to the table.

From the GB Final to Sweden

Representing Great Britain will be Kamila Blaszczyk, Deputy Head Sommelier at Celeste in London’s Notting Hill. She earned her place in Sweden by winning the 2026 Chaîne des Rôtisseurs GB Young Sommelier Competition, whose national final culminated in an awards dinner at The Cadogan in London. Her victory places her among an international field of young professionals competing for one of sommellerie’s most exacting honours.

A Nordic Wine Destination

Båstad is better known internationally for tennis, yet its wider setting makes it a persuasive stage for a wine competition. Skåne County lies at the centre of Sweden’s rapidly developing wine culture, with vineyards, accomplished restaurants and ambitious hospitality helping to establish the region as an emerging Nordic destination for gastronomic travel. The Skansen Båstad, with sea views and a position between beach and harbour, brings the worlds of resort elegance and exacting service together.

Precision Under Pressure

The official programme begins with the competitors’ arrival and welcome dinner on Wednesday 14 October, followed by an educational day trip. The semi-final takes place on Friday, with the final, awards presentation and gala dinner on Saturday 17 October. At this level, blind tasting is only part of the challenge: depth of knowledge, polished service, adaptability and composure all matter when every gesture is being judged.

For Blaszczyk, the next 40 days will be measured in vintages revised, pairings rehearsed and service details refined. When the first glass is poured in Båstad, she will carry not only the title of GB Young Sommelier champion, but the hopes of Britain’s hospitality community. We wish her the very best of luck.
