Båstad 2026: Sweden’s Emerging Wine Frontier

When wine lovers think of Europe, Sweden may not be the first destination that comes to mind. Yet in recent years, the southern region of Skåne has quietly established itself as one of Northern Europe’s most exciting emerging wine regions.

In October 2026, Båstad will host the International Jeunes Sommeliers Competition, providing competitors and guests with an opportunity to discover a distinctly Scandinavian approach to viticulture. Benefiting from long summer daylight hours, a maritime climate and the increasing success of cool-climate and disease-resistant grape varieties, Swedish wine production has grown significantly over the past decade.

The competition programme includes visits to some of Sweden’s leading vineyards, including Kullabergs Vingård, Halldora Vingård and Thora Vingård, each offering a different perspective on modern Swedish winemaking. From sustainable viticulture to innovative grape varieties and low-intervention winemaking, these producers are helping to define the future of wine in the region.

Appropriately for an international sommelier competition, Swedish wines will feature throughout the weekend, culminating in a Gala Dinner highlighting local wines and produce from the Bjäre Peninsula.

The event also reflects Great Britain’s strong involvement in the international Chaîne, with Bailli Délégué Philip Evins serving on the Conseil Magistral.

The International Jeunes Sommeliers Competition is about more than identifying the world’s most talented young sommeliers. It is also an opportunity to explore emerging wine regions, exchange knowledge and celebrate the diversity of wine culture around the world.

In 2026, all roads lead north to Båstad.

The International Jeunes Sommeliers Competition and Grand Chapitre de Suède will take place in Båstad, Sweden, from 16–18 October 2026.
