A Special Dinner at the National Liberal Club

Member’s Review

Pauline Conway,  Vice-Chargée de Missions, gives her account and pictures of a special Chaîne evening at one of the most historic clubs in London.

When you start with Champagne Pommery, you know it’s going to be an excellent evening. Last night we attended a dinner organised by the Thames Valley Bailliage of the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, held at The National Liberal Club, a private members’ club established by William Gladstone (four times Prime Minister) and opened in 1887.

Designed by the leading Victorian architect Alfred Waterhouse in a French, Gothic and Italianate style, with many of the interior walls covered in tiles. The National Liberal Club was the first building in London to have a lift installed and to be lit entirely by electric lighting. It is an impressive building!

"Delicious food … lovely wines … excellent service and great company … Vive la Chaîne"
