Dinner at the Montagu Arms Hotel

December 4, 2006

The Montagu Arms Hotel at Beaulieu in the New Forest was stunningly decorated for Christmas when a full house of members and guests enjoyed the wonderful cooking of Shaun Hill. It has been voted ‘Hampshire Restaurant of the year’ by Which? Good Food Guide 2007 and one of the AA’s top 200 Hotels in Britain.

Shaun has been a double Michelin starred Chef for over 25 years first as Head Chef at the Capital Hotel in London, then as Head Chef and Managing Director of the Gidleigh Park Hotel in Devon, and finally at The Merchant’s House in Ludlow.

Chassagne Montrachet as the aperitif set the evening off to a good start. Then the taste of seasonal food won many hearts - the turbot was superb and the mallard just perfect.

The courses were matched by five different Premier Cru Burgundies from the famous house of Bouchard Aîné et Fils in Beaune, plus a Sauternes from Chateau du Levant. There was debate as to whether the Nuits St Georges was drinking better than the Savigny Les Beaune, but all were excellent.
