Lunch at Pitch, Worthing

August 12, 2021

Pitch is a bright new restaurant owned by Kenny Tutt, a 2018 Masterchef Champion. It has a fresh contemporary feel and is located in the pedestrian precinct in the heart of Worthing town.

On arrival there were glasses of sparkling Winston Estate, Goring Blanc de Blancs ‘Family Release’, Sussex NV. By the name a local wine and extremely pleasing. To accompany it were olives and a selection of chef’s Choritzo and Manchego and a restaurant speciality – black garlic and feta savoury doughnuts, these last being a first for all and certainly to be repeated.

The first course was Heritage Beetroot with Golden Cross goat’s cheese and candied walnut. The flavour of beetroot was suffused with the sweet soft cheese cleverly producing a new taste of neither and both at the same time. A white Monemvasia Winery Tsimbidi, Kydonitsa, Laconia 2019 and a red Olivier Coste, Carignan Noir, ‘Je t’aime’, IGP Pays d’Oc 2020 were offered for this starter and both wines were exceedingly complementary. Next a main of Cod Loin with double smoked bacon, spring greens and olive oil crushed potatoes, all on a smooth of delicious mussel cream. The cod was presented as a steak with crispy skin and was set off well by the smoky hints from the bacon. The olive oil nicely softened the vegetables while the mussel cream was quite frankly outrageously wonderful. From Greece came a wine, quite full bodied, Gaia Wines, ‘Monograph Assyrtiko’, Peleponese2019. Slightly reminiscent of a Condrieu, this was a fine wine and represented well the Greek vineyards for those who have not yet discovered them.

The desert was Strawberries, crème fraiche with mint. Inside the cream was a delicious filling of strawberry and the mint flavour set off the entire dish to be precisely as stated on the tin. A Sauternes, Chateau Suduiraut, Castelnau de Suduiraut, 2019 accompanied the desert. Coffee, tea and infusions to finish a well presented and excellent lunch at Pitch.

Congratulations to Ben for managing this event and of course to all of the kitchen and front of house staff for a very pleasant and memorable experience.
