Our Chilterns member Mary Galer, GM at Wilding, has come to our aid at short notice to help with our first event of the year. As you will see it is quite different to a normal Chaine menu as we have sharing plates!

We are really looking forward to going back to The Woodspeen as we have not had an event at there since Covid in fact the last one was a lunch in 2019. It was a really good afternoon. This time we have PRIVATE DINING in the Cookery School which should make it exceptional. Under the guidance of Executive Chef Peter Eaton we expect both events on the day to be great.

Once again, we look forward to another great evening with Nick and Mary at their new venue. As you know they have done us proud in the past and I am sure this time will be no exception. We are also working with our friends from the Confrérie du Sabre d’Or to add to the event. Mary is a member. This is our summer event of 2023 and should set us all up nicely for the rest of the year. It has great access from Reading by train and road.

The Wessex and Chilterns Bailliages Sandbanks and Sobo tour

Roots has always been about simple exquisite food with complimentary wines. Traditionally it provides a tasting menu which allows Jan to serve creative dishes. Since opening they have received several awards including a recommendation from the Michelin guide, 2 AA rosettes, and rated as one of the best restaurants in Dorset in the Good Food Guide.

Over the years we try to organize great events and our tour starts in Sandbanks at the RMYC. This one will be special. Officially founded in May 1905, The Motor Yacht Club was created by a group of enthusiastic gentlemen who were members of the new Automobile Club, later to become the Royal Automobile Club in Pall Mall, London.

Over the years we try to change the seasons with our member restaurant events We revert back to lunch event in the Spring with L’Ortolan. Again it promises to be another great lunch and afternoon for the Chilterns Bailliage.

The team in this great private club have certainly put on a superb menu for us. As many of you know we held a casual lunch here pre Covid. It was a great success, so we wanted to put The Hind Head onto our main program for 2022.

It is a couple of years since the Six Bells was bought by Luke and Becky Woods, after refurbishment they reopened again in April 2021. We go back to the French Horn for our Kick-Off event for 2022. It is a couple of years since we had a full house here and we look forward to another great event with Michael Emmanuel and his team. The original Chaine Plaque is still by the magnificent fireplace with the new plaque nearby.

The Miller of Mansfield is a favourite of many of our members, we have held a number of dinners historically however this is the first time they have hosted a lunch for us. It is amazing to think that this is nearly the 6th Birthday of the Miller… We are really looking forward to the lunch so lets kick off our year with hopefully a sell out for the award winning The Miller of Mansfield. Since 2014, Sudbury House & Restaurant 56, a modern fine dining concept housed in the hotel’s grade 2 listed building has gone on the culinary map by gaining 3 AA Rosettes in just 18 months and winning Best Gastronomic Restaurant at the Oxfordshire Restaurant Awards for 2 years running. If our last visit is anything to go by it will be a late night in the bar after…

Carl, who is originally from Southampton, moved to Wantage in Oxfordshire when he was 5 years old and discovered his passion for cooking while studying Home Economics at school. Carl has 26 years’ experience working as a Chef and believes vehemently that good ingredients are key to great food. As many of you know our Committee member and founder member of Chilterns Andy McGuinness works at the club and he will be involved on the day.

We have additionally organised a tour of the vegetable plots and gardens at 1.45pm. As many of you know the Chilterns Baillage was founded here and I am really looking forward to returning. This is French cooking with a touch of modernity. Xavier is a founder and Committee member of the Chilterns Bailliage which has successfully grown since its launch in 2015. [Please note the change of date from that previously announced]

This year The Diners Choice 2018 award has been added to the fine collection that the husband and wife team Nick and Mary Galer have built up in recent years. These include winning Waitrose Good Food Guide Restaurant of the year, Luxury Travel Guide Hospitality Awards Winner, and Best Destination Pub, in the Muddy Stilettos award.

Nick and Mary have certainly created a great menu with wine pairings to make it an outstanding night.

Dinner at Restaurant 56 in Faringdon 7.30pm for 8.00pm

This is our first Chaine event at Restaurant 56 and we look forward to a great Chilterns evening dining with Executive Head Chef Andrew Scott and his team. Andrew has spent his entire career in Michelin-starred kitchens, training initially at Mallory Court, Lords of the Manor and L’Enclume then moving on to the Curlew restaurant in East Sussex. Andrew hails from Banbury and marks a return to his home county of Oxfordshire at Restaurant 56. In 2014, he joined Sudbury House as Executive Head Chef - this exciting project included the opening of Restaurant 56, a modern fine dining concept housed in the hotel’s grade 2 listed building. Andrew and his team put the restaurant on the culinary map by gaining 3 AA Rosettes in just 18 months and winning Best Gastronomic Restaurant at the Oxfordshire Restaurant Awards for 2 years running. In 2016, Andrew achieved a life-long dream of taking part in the Great British Menu, representing the Central Region and winning many fans on his journey.

A Degustation dinner on Saturday, 10 March 2018 at the 3 Rosette “La Belle Epoque” Restaurant at the Sofitel Heathrow, hosted by Chef Rôtisseur Mayur Nagale and his team, who have created a wonderfully inventive menu using ingredients from the Pacific Rim to inspire traditional European dishes.
