Report on Spring Luncheon at the Yorke Arms

It is always a pleasure to visit Nidderdale and to enjoy Michelin- starred Frances Atkins’ superb food and wine. We expect something wild from the local hedgerows when we eat here, and this year it was primroses, in a pannacotta Amuse Bouche. This was followed by delicious seared scallop, partnered by Petit Chablis, Domaine Vrignaud, then we moved on to the local lamb, full flavoured and nicely matched by Guardian Peak Merlot from Stellenbosch. Desserts were a chocolate mousse which seemed to be even darker than 80%, and a lovely pistachio ice cream. With our coffee we ate a generous number of delightful petit fours.

As ever we were looked after by Frances’ expert front of house staff – who stay with her for year after year, so we see familiar faces each time. They were particularly welcoming to the two young grandchildren of a Chaîne member, who were enjoying their first solo experience in the restaurant next door, and behaving with great panache.

Menu quotations

Our Yorkshire Argentier, Ted Kendall, always provides an apt quotation for the menus which he produces for us, and it is about time they had wider publicity. This time it read “Oh, that miracle clove! Not only does garlic taste good, it cures baldness and tennis elbow too.” Laurie Burrows Grad.
