It was 2013 when John Campbell stumbled on a run-down country pub, looking sad and unloved. Yet even in that sorry state, he was smitten by its breath taking views over the West Berkshire countryside. And he desperately wanted to restore this fading beauty to its former glory, and its rightful place at the heart of the local community.

In late 2014, with a lot of help from former colleagues and a few fresh faces, The Woodspeen was born. A light and airy restaurant with picture windows; an open kitchen, a log fire, and a stylish bar. With a cookery school next door, in a beautifully converted barn.

Having worked in hotels and restaurants around the world for the whole of his adult life, John had a clear vision for his own restaurant – with a focus on seasonal dishes, using ingredients grown or foraged on our own land. Before we knew it, we’d achieved our first Michelin star for our food and service, and a Wine Spectator award for our wine list.
