A Scottish Evening

Sometimes it is possible to judge the success of an event by the amount of noise generated. And ‘A Scottish Evening’ at Cassons Restaurant on January 26th to mark Burns Night had it all. This was one of those Chaîne events that made everyone feel good - including the management. The Cock-a-Leekie Soup and the Arbroath Smokie Croquette would have been entirely acceptable as a small meal in themselves, full of strong flavours and transporting me timelessly back to when my old Scottish aunt used to make them. But this was just the overture; the main course of Venison Fillet with a supporting cast of vegetables and finessed with a Haggis Puree fully matched the Caledonian ambience generated by the tartans being worn and the Burns recitals sprinkled throughout the evening.
The Scottish Cheddar was robust with oatcakes and Fig Puree - and then came the dessert. A Quartet of Scottish Deserts where one of them was a portion of deep fried Mars Bar. Some had always wondered but never dared…. Coffee was accompanied by Scottish Reels playing in the background – a fitting end to the rousing evening. However as if this had not been enough, there was also a wonderfully challenging Scottish Night Quiz presented by the management and which produced some surprising answers, both in fact and by invention. It is fair to say that our hosts Cass and Viv provided an astonishingly good evening that will remain with those attending for a good long time to come. Lang may yer lum reek!
